Meet Willow & Marlee

At Authentic Connections Counseling LLC, I incorporate the use of a therapy dog into my work with my clients. I believe the presence of animals includes many scientific benefits including increased engagement in sessions and reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Willow is a first-generation mix of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. Willow is actively participating in obedience and behavior modification to prepare her for the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Exam. Willow is a certified therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Marlee is a mixed breed rescued from Puerto Rico right before Hurricane Maria in 2017. Marlee is currently working towards her therapy dog certification.

Benefits of Canine-Assisted Therapy

Canine-assisted therapy, often referred to as animal-assisted therapy or pet therapy, has proven to be a remarkable and uplifting approach to healing and well-being. The positive benefits of canine-assisted therapy are manifold:

  1. Emotional Support: Interacting with dogs can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. The mere presence of a friendly, non-judgmental companion can provide a sense of comfort and emotional support.

  2. Enhanced Mood: Canines have an innate ability to boost mood and stimulate the release of feel-good hormones, like oxytocin and serotonin. This can help individuals struggling with depression or mood disorders experience a noticeable uplift in their spirits.

  3. Physical Health: The act of petting or playing with dogs can lead to lower blood pressure and heart rate. Canine-assisted therapy can also improve physical fitness as individuals engage in activities like walking or playing fetch.

  4. Social Interaction: For those dealing with social anxiety or isolation, dogs can serve as a bridge to human connection. They can encourage conversation and interaction among individuals who might otherwise be withdrawn.

  5. Stress Reduction: Dogs can offer a profound sense of calm and relaxation. Their presence can be especially soothing in high-stress environments, such as hospitals, schools, or workplaces.

  6. Increased Motivation: Patients often find that the prospect of engaging in canine-assisted therapy motivates them to participate in their treatment programs more actively. This motivation can enhance the overall effectiveness of therapy.

  7. Cognitive Stimulation: Interacting with dogs can improve cognitive function, particularly for seniors or individuals with cognitive impairments. It encourages mental engagement and problem-solving, such as teaching a dog tricks.

  8. Non-Judgmental Companionship: Dogs are remarkable in their ability to provide unconditional love and support. They offer a safe space for individuals to express themselves without fear of judgment.

  9. Post-Traumatic Stress Relief: Canine-assisted therapy has been especially effective in helping veterans and survivors of trauma cope with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

  10. Enhanced Quality of Life: Ultimately, the presence of dogs in therapy settings can lead to an improved overall quality of life. Their presence helps individuals find joy and solace in the midst of difficult circumstances.

Canine-assisted therapy is a heartwarming and scientifically validated approach to promoting mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Its positive benefits extend to people of all ages and backgrounds, making it a cherished and transformative addition to the field of therapy and healthcare.
